Château Trotanoy 1982 is a legendary Pomerol that remains a benchmark for the Right Bank. This vintage is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc grown on the estate’s famous mix of heavy clay and gravel soils. The 1982 growing season provided the heat necessary to create an opulent and fleshy wine with high glycerin and a velvety texture. On the nose it displays an explosive bouquet of sweet black cherries, kirsch, truffle and new leather. The palate is full-bodied and seamless with a dense core of fruit and melting tannins that have evolved beautifully over four decades. While it is fully mature, well-stored bottles continue to show remarkable freshness and a lingering finish of spice and dark chocolate.

The 1982 Trotanoy is a vintage that I have not seen for a few years, but what a wine this is – the best since the 1975. Showing only modest bricking on the rim, the bouquet is entrancing with blackcurrant, black truffle, light fig and cassis notes, not rich but sumptuous in style, all with admirable delineation. The palate is very well balanced with a touch of glycerine on the entry. There is real depth and structure to this Pomerol, insistent grip with an irresistible fruit-driven, quite plummy finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is an outstanding Trotanoy. Pale to medium brick colored, the 1982 Château Trotanoy features flashy notes of Morello cherries, strawberry preserves, rose bud tea, dried bay leaves, and unsmoked cigars with a waft of wood smoke in the background. The light to medium-bodied palate is refreshing and lively with soft, powdery tannins and whispers of red berries and dried herbs on the delicate finish.Lisa Perrotti-Brown18th March 2024

World Class Pomerol

One of Pomerol's leading estates, Trotanoy was purchased by the Mouiex family in the mid-1950s. Farming around eight hectares of vines around a kilometre away from Petrus, the Trotanoy plantings are 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc on clay and gravel soils. The grapes are hand-harvested before being pressed and fermented in concrete vats. Maturation takes place in oak barriques, around 75% of which are new, for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered.

The wine's bold, concentrated style is a favourite with critics and connoisseurs alike with The Wine Advocate's Robert Parker dubbing Trotanoy "one of my favourite estates".
