Purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, Château Trotanoy has been considered one of the premier crus of Pomerol since the end of the eighteenth century. Offered in glorious half bottle format, the 1970 vintage oozes majestic concentration of dark fruits, with decadent notes of cocoa and truffles. A beautiful find from an historic vintage.

Although I have tasted the 1970 Trotanoy on a dozen or so occasions, this is the first time in magnum. It remains youthful in appearance with only minor bricking. The bouquet is wonderful, featuring dark berry fruit, black truffle, singed leather, undergrowth and just a touch of the Japanese green tea element I observed before. The palate is medium-bodied with finely sculpted tannins. The 1970 is just a little rustic, yet it coheres beautifully in the glass with hints of green olive toward the finish. This is superb. Well-kept larger formats still have much to offer. Tasted at the Pomerol dinner at Cornus in London.Neal Martin25th March 2025

World Class Pomerol

One of Pomerol's leading estates, Trotanoy was purchased by the Mouiex family in the mid-1950s. Farming around eight hectares of vines around a kilometre away from Petrus, the Trotanoy plantings are 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc on clay and gravel soils. The grapes are hand-harvested before being pressed and fermented in concrete vats. Maturation takes place in oak barriques, around 75% of which are new, for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered.

The wine's bold, concentrated style is a favourite with critics and connoisseurs alike with The Wine Advocate's Robert Parker dubbing Trotanoy "one of my favourite estates".
