Trotanoy 1996 is a full-bodied, Merlot-based red wine from the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux. One of Pomerol`s leading estates, Trotanoy was purchased by the Mouiex family in the mid-1950s. Farming around eight hectares of vines around a kilometre away from Petrus, the Trotanoy plantings are 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc on clay and gravel soils. The wine`s bold, concentrated style is a favourite with critics and connoisseurs alike with The Wine Advocate`s Robert Parker dubbing Trotanoy "one of my favourite estates". On the 1996. "Dark ruby with surprising pink at the rim, the 1996 Trotanoy seems very tightly knit, with dusty tannins, hints of sweet and sour cherry fruit, finishing to a somewhat liquid minerality and spicy note." Wine Advocate, 2003

- The 1996 Trotanoy is a vintage that I have not encountered for some time. It has a slightly disjointed nose, indicating that this was a benevolent vintage toward Pomerol. On the nose, touches of leather, Christmas cake and some figgy scents do not really cohere in the glass. The palate is more harmonious than the aromatics, with touches of brown spice. The 1996 is quite smooth on the finish, though it is missing some bandwidth. Drink this in the near future. Tasted at the Pomerol dinner at Cornus in London.

The grapes are hand-harvested before being pressed and fermented in concrete vats. Maturation takes place in oak barriques, around 75% of which are new, for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered.
