Purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, Château Trotanoy is one of Pomerol`s leading wine producers, particularly well-known for its complex terroir. Circa 90% of its 7-hectare vineyard is planted to Merlot, with Cabernet Franc accounting for the remainder. This is the 1990 vintage of its flagship wine, which has been fermented in small concrete vats and matured for 18 months in oak barrels, of which 50% are new. The wine offers a creamy texture, with notes of black cherries, cassis, thyme, cloves and liquorice.

Thyme, mint, fennel, liqourice, cloves, dried herbs all spiral up out of the glass. The tannins are melted but still succulent, and this feels earthy and rooted, with concentration to the black cherry and cassis core even at 31 years old. A ton of colour still, this remains relatively young and shows just how impressive a wine Trotanoy is, with a creamy texture that makes you want to dive right in, with ash and hearth smoke as it opens. At the time Trotanoy was being made in a more traditional way than today - meaning there was less plot selection, and harvests would have swept from one side of the vineyard to the other - but it was being overseen by the supremely talented Jean-Claude Berrouet, and located on the same exceptional soils. Less expressive on the nose than the Palmer, but this muscles and grip, and gets better every time you go back to the glass. An incredible wine that you will want to share. 91 Vinous
(90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc; 3.68 pH; IPT 73; 13.3% alcohol): Bright red with an amber rim. Gamey aromas of black cherry, fig, leather, ink and spices; conveys an impression of rusticity. Fresh and lively on entry, then earthy and supple in the middle, with ripe acidity framing the black fruit and licorice pastille flavors. At once densely packed and lively, with a very long finish featuring substantial but smooth tannins and a trace of bitterness. This delicious, silky, open-knit Trotanoy is currently drinking well.Ian d'Agata1st March 2012

World Class Pomerol
One of Pomerol's leading estates, Trotanoy was purchased by the Mouiex family in the mid-1950s. Farming around eight hectares of vines around a kilometre away from Petrus, the Trotanoy plantings are 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc on clay and gravel soils. The grapes are hand-harvested before being pressed and fermented in concrete vats. Maturation takes place in oak barriques, around 75% of which are new, for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered.
The wine's bold, concentrated style is a favourite with critics and connoisseurs alike with The Wine Advocate's Robert Parker dubbing Trotanoy "one of my favourite estates".
