Situated on the western expanse of the Pomerol plateau in close proximity to Pétrus and Lafleur, Château Trotanoy spans around 7 hectares of vineyards. A predominant 90% of the vineyard is dedicated to Merlot, while the remaining portion is allocated to Cabernet Franc. This bottle hailing from the 1971 vintage represents a piece of history. Now surpassing 50 years in age, it has evolved to a fully mature stage while retaining its vitality. The tannins have gracefully resolved, the acidity is finely balanced, and it presents a captivating amalgamation of black cherries, interwoven with notes of mushrooms, forest floor, leather, a cigar box.

I crossed my fingers, because I’ve encountered more than my fair share of corked bottles of the 1971 Trotanoy, but punishment had already been meted out with the previous pair, so the laws of probability meant that… Oh, FFS. A third consecutive corked bottle, immediately obvious this time. One case of TCA is unfortunate. Two indicates some heinous crime in a previous life. Three, to quote the brothers Gibb, is a tragedy.Neal Martin1st February 2022

Chateau Trotanoy
World Class Pomerol
One of Pomerol's leading estates, Trotanoy was purchased by the Mouiex family in the mid-1950s. Farming around eight hectares of vines around a kilometre away from Petrus, the Trotanoy plantings are 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc on clay and gravel soils. The grapes are hand-harvested before being pressed and fermented in concrete vats. Maturation takes place in oak barriques, around 75% of which are new, for 18 months before being bottled unfiltered.
The wine's bold, concentrated style is a favourite with critics and connoisseurs alike with The Wine Advocate's Robert Parker dubbing Trotanoy "one of my favourite estates".
