Château Troplong-Mondot 2012 is a full-bodied, Merlot-based red wine from the St-Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. Château Troplong-Mondot is a Bordeaux producer ranked as Premier Grand Cru Classé [B] in the Saint-Émilion classification, which was updated in 2022. After more than 80 years in the hands of the Valette family, the property was purchased by French insurance firm SCOR in 2017, who appointed Aymeric de Gironde as its director. The 2021 is an assemblage of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. "One of the superstars of the vintage, it boasts an inky/purple colour as well as abundant notes of blueberry liqueur, graphite, truffles, acacia flowers and subtle toast. Full-bodied, opulent and already easy to drink, this large-scaled wine possesses high levels of tannin, but they are relatively well-concealed by the extravagant fruit, glycerin, texture and density of this compelling Troplong Mondot. This impressive wine may shut down after bottling and require 4-5 years of cellaring." Wine Advocate, 2013

The 2012 is another truly great wine from Troplong Mondot. It’s always sentimental to taste this wine, realizing that proprietress Christine Valette (the larger-than-life heart and soul behind this estate) has passed away. She was one of the bright, shining stars of Bordeaux. Nevertheless, her legacy is certainly well-established, and the quality of this wine is beyond reproach. Inky bluish purple, its great notes of cassis, blackberry, licorice are followed by a full-bodied, opulently textured wine with stunning concentration, purity and overall balance. It should drink well for 20-25 years and turn out to be one of the great superstars of 2012. Their 63-acre vineyard was cropped at 31 hectoliters per hectare, producing a final blend of 90% Merlot and 10 Cabernet Sauvignon that achieved 14.2% alcohol.Robert Parker30th April 2015

Black cherry and damson, the tannins are powerful but letting some light in at this point, although this is still significantly more oaked than many 2012s that you will find. Enjoyable, bodes well for the future if given another five or six years in bottle, dominated by aniseed, fennel, bitter black chocolate, ripe damson puree, crayon. Eucalyptus and mint offer a welcome breath of fresh air on the finish. 100% new oak, Michel Rolland consultant.Jane Anson21st July 2022

The 2012 Troplong Mondot has a fragrant bouquet with black cherry, cough candy and touches of marmalade, not complex but vigorous and fresh. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bone-structure and good acidity. Some expressive Cabernet Franc lends a Left Bank tincture on the spicy, black pepper-tinged finish. Classy, but not sure about its longevity. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Neal Martin27th September 2022
