A bold and complex red wine from the heart of Priorat, this release from Bodegas Torres is a blend of Garnacha, Carignan, and Syrah. Expect a full-bodied expression, featuring notes of black cherries, plums, dark chocolate and a hint of new leather. A perfect choice for pairing with roasted meats, game, and aged cheeses.

Started in 2016. Right at the top of a hill – very high and mountainous 1.86-ha vineyard, steep, 460–470 m. Soils are pure licorella. Vines were planted in 1939 and 1940. After a hard day with hydric stress the afternoon sun in this region often burns the grapes, but this particular vineyard has no afternoon sun, so it cools faster and escapes the burn. A field blend of bush vines. Incredibly rocky soil. Whole berries in small fermenters, short maceration, gentle pumping over, soft extraction, then French oak. They make five casks of 500 litres, usually two new and three used. Wine is kept in wood for between 12 and 18 months. Produce around 2,000 bottles.A wine that growls. And then soars. José Carreras in a glass? Has the intensity of Reserva Real but not the heaviness or thickness. It’s almost as if cold, rain-washed black pebbles have been channelled through the centre line of the wine. Tannins are gnarled yet gleaming. The fruit slips along shining black-rock planes from raspberry-red brightness to mulberry purple velvet and back again. Mouth-watering. Makes me think that the future of Priorat is north-east-facing vineyards. (TC)
