The 2019 Torres Mas La Plana is a single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from the Penedès region of Spain. Produced by Familia Torres, this wine comes from the esteemed Mas La Plana vineyard, planted on clay and limestone soils. The 2019 vintage was characterised by warm and dry conditions, producing a wine of significant concentration and power. It presents a profile of ripe blackcurrant, cassis and cedar, with notes of spice and tobacco from its ageing in new French oak barrels.

A cuvée produced since 1970, the 2019 Mas La Plana is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Penedès. Aged 18 months in oak barrels and foudres (61% new) with only 4% remaining in steel tanks, this wine presents a garnet hue with a purple sheen. The aromas feature cassis, tobacco and licorice, along with ripe cherry and orange petit four. Dry, rich and indulgent, it flows with intensity, eventually becoming compact due to its chalky mouthfeel. This full-flavored Cabernet boasts an international flair.Joaquin Hidalgo1st September 2024

Full bottle 1,323 g. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from a plot in the 29-ha Mas La Plana vineyard planted 1964 to 1979 at 225 m in the Alt Penedès on yellowish grey-brown alluvial soils, deep and well drained, with moderate water-holding capacity. Comprised of alternating layers of gravel, sand and clay. Maceration time15–25 days. Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and oak foudres for seven days at25–28 °C and then aged for 18 months in French oak barriques (91%), 30-hl foudres (5%) and stainless-steel tanks (4%). 61% new barrels. Wine first made in 1970 and it `won` the 1979 Gault Millau Wine Olympics.Very deep garnet. Less obvious nose than the Jean León Vinya La Scala 2017 and a little less luscious but more complex with a real future. This is still a youthful wine on which I got a whiff of raspberry. I`d wait awhile before broaching it as I`m sure it has more to give. (JR)
