Torbreck Descendant 2006 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard northern Rhône-style Syrah produced from old vines in the Barossa Valley of Australia. Torbreck Vintners winery was founded by David Powell in 1994 and has become a byword for concentrated, complex, long-lived Barossa Shiraz. "The Shiraz for the 2006 The Descendant is sourced from a single vineyard and co-fermented with 8% Viognier. It was aged for 18 months in seasoned French oak. Opaque purple-coloured, it emits an expressive, sexy perfume of violets, wood smoke, black pepper, espresso, blueberry, and chocolate. Full-bodied, on the palate, this voluptuous effort has great concentration with a noticeable uplift from the Viognier, tons of spicy black fruits, enough ripe tannin to evolve for a decade, and 60-second finish. It should provide pleasure from 2016 through 2036." Wine Advocate, 2009

The 2006 Descendant, a blend of 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier, has a melted chocolate-tinged bouquet, mulberry, mint, stewed fig and traces of Medjool dates. The palate is incredibly medicinal with strong eucalyptus notes suffusing the soft red fruit with a touch of white pepper on the finish. Drinking perfectly now, this has more pleasure than the 2014 Runrig by direct comparison. Neal Martin1st March 2022

Old-vine Treasures of the Barossa Valley

Founded in 1994 by David Powell, Torbreck has quickly positioned itself as one of the greatest wineries in Australia. This has been partly due to its unwavering commitment to its core vision and not being influenced by trends and fashions. Focusing on Rhone varieties such as Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre planted in 1840, the fruit here is uniquely rich and concentrated. After manually harvesting, the grapes are fermented in either stainless steel or cement vats. After that, the young wine is transferred into French oak barriques for maturation- usually 20-24 months. The result is bold, flavourful and wines that reflect their origins. These wines maintain a style that is impressively consistent over the vintages, favouring richness but with structure and a distinctive core of energy.
