Tolpuddle Chardonnay 2024 is an iconic cool-climate white from Tasmania’s Coal River Valley. Sourced from a vineyard with lean, flinty soils and a strong maritime influence, this vintage delivers a crystalline profile of lemon peel, green apple and crushed stone. The magnum format provides an ideal environment for the slow development of its hallmark reduction and laser-like acidity. Winemaking focuses on whole-bunch pressing and maturation in French oak, creating a seamless integration of texture and mineral drive. It stands as a pinnacle of Australian Chardonnay, offering a sophisticated, saline finish and an architectural structure that will evolve with immense precision over the next 15 years.

Full screwcapped bottle 1,351 g. Site facing east-north-east on silica sands over sandstone at 90 m elevation. Big clonal mix. 5,500 vines/ha. They are keen to limit yield per vine.
Very pale straw. High-toned and intense nose. Hint of struck match. Winemaker Adam Wadewitz thinks a bit of this ‘offsets the simplicity of the fruit’ but denies it’s deliberate. ‘It just sort of happens.’ He assured me that the IWC-awarded 2023 has more struck-match character. Rich fruit and a strong flavour of lime boiled sweet/hard candy. (JR)
