Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 2005 is a prestige Blanc de Blancs Champagne from the Reims region of France, presented in magnum format. This vintage highlights the elegance and finesse of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. It offers a refined nose of lemon zest, white flowers, toasted almonds and chalky minerality. The palate is precise, energetic and complex, with a fine, creamy mousse that leads to a persistent, saline finish. The magnum format ensures an even, slow maturation, preserving the freshness and aromatic depth of the 2005 vintage.

Taittinger’s 2005 Comtes de Champagne was a perfect way to commence proceedings. Orchard fruit and hints of brioche on the seductive nose are joined by a hint of lemon verbena filtering through with time. The palate is beautifully balanced, perhaps not as riveting as a recently tasted 2008, yet underpinned by a fine bead of acidity and exuding harmony on the apricot-tinged finish. This is drinking perfectly now but should give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure. Neal Martin1st March 2022

Born of a challenging, disease-pressured season that demanded rigorous selection—yet one that nonetheless delivered considerable maturity in the weeks leading up to harvest—the 2005 Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne, disgorged in 2015, is exhibiting aromas of yellow apple, juicy peach and mirabelle plum, mingling with apricot, dried flowers and buttery pastry. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and textural, with a rich core of fruit and ripe yet vibrant acids. In context, however, it is less harmonious and slightly heavier than other Comtes vintages shown at this tasting, lacking some of the usual energy and incisiveness. This is a good moment to pull the corks. - Kristaps Karklins

A Family Business

The Taittinger family have been running their eponymous Champagne house since 1932. One of the last family-owned houses in Reims, the brand has a reputation for quality-driven vintage and non-vintage Champagnes. Sourcing fruit from over 35 vineyards sites, the team produce a range of styles including an elegant non-vintage, two sweeter Champagnes in the form of Nocturne and Demi-Sec and a Grand Cru-based non-vintage.

The Taittinger family's Prestige Cuvée is Comtes de Champagne, first produced in 1952. This Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) is produced using fruit from five different Grand Cru sites across the Côte de Blancs. An aromatic, full-bodied Champagne with notes of citrus oil and green apple in youth, Comtes de Champagne ages superbly, with time in the bottle revealing notes of toasted hazelnut and a creamy richness.
