Taittinger Comtes de Champagne is a prestigious blanc de blancs cuvée crafted exclusively from the finest Chardonnay grapes from the Côte des Blancs region. The champagne is only produced in vintages characterized by a harvest of remarkable quality. The winemaking process adheres to the strict utilization of solely the initial press juice, with an additional refinement of 5% of the wines taking place in new oak barrels. Presented in bottles reflecting an antique 18th-century style, this meticulously handcrafted champagne is matured deep within the UNESCO-recognized Saint-Nicaise cellars in Reims, resting a minimum of eight years before release.

Born of a challenging, disease-pressured season that demanded rigorous selection—yet one that nonetheless delivered considerable maturity in the weeks leading up to harvest—the 2005 Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne, disgorged in 2015, is exhibiting aromas of yellow apple, juicy peach and mirabelle plum, mingling with apricot, dried flowers and buttery pastry. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and textural, with a rich core of fruit and ripe yet vibrant acids. In context, however, it is less harmonious and slightly heavier than other Comtes vintages shown at this tasting, lacking some of the usual energy and incisiveness. This is a good moment to pull the corks. — Kristaps Karklins, 4th December 2025

Taittinger’s 2005 Comtes de Champagne was a perfect way to commence proceedings. Orchard fruit and hints of brioche on the seductive nose are joined by a hint of lemon verbena filtering through with time. The palate is beautifully balanced, perhaps not as riveting as a recently tasted 2008, yet underpinned by a fine bead of acidity and exuding harmony on the apricot-tinged finish. This is drinking perfectly now but should give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure. — Neal Martin, 1st March 2022

Very fine bead. Very tight and some dried spices on the nose. Rich and nervy. Dry finish. Already starting to come out and beguile. Tighter knit than the vintage 2005 in magnum. Not yet ready. (JR) — Jancis Robinson, 28th August 2017

A Family Business

The Taittinger family have been running their eponymous Champagne house since 1932. One of the last family-owned houses in Reims, the brand has a reputation for quality-driven vintage and non-vintage Champagnes. Sourcing fruit from over 35 vineyards sites, the team produce a range of styles including an elegant non-vintage, two sweeter Champagnes in the form of Nocturne and Demi-Sec and a Grand Cru-based non-vintage.

The Taittinger family's Prestige Cuvée is Comtes de Champagne, first produced in 1952. This Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) is produced using fruit from five different Grand Cru sites across the Côte de Blancs. An aromatic, full-bodied Champagne with notes of citrus oil and green apple in youth, Comtes de Champagne ages superbly, with time in the bottle revealing notes of toasted hazelnut and a creamy richness.
