Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 1999 is an exceptional vintage from the esteemed Champagne house, Taittinger, established in 1734. This cuvée is crafted exclusively from 100% Chardonnay grapes, sourced from five Grand Cru villages in the Côte des Blancs. Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Oger, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. A small portion of the blend, approximately 5%, is aged in new oak barrels, enhancing the wine`s complexity and depth.

On the nose, it reveals a complex bouquet of tropical fruits, pastry, and floral notes. The palate is fresh, full, and round, with high acidity and a medium body, showcasing flavours of honey, vanilla, bread, creamy butter, and dried fruits. The finish is long, vibrant, and smooth, reflecting the wine`s maturity and elegance.

This vintage has been praised for its balance and potential for further ageing, with Wine Enthusiast awarding it 96 points, highlighting its intense Chardonnay character and pure mineral, green, and citrus fruit profile. Wine Advocate`s Antonio Galloni also commended its inviting personality and polished finish, suggesting it will continue to evolve over the coming years.

The 1999 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne is beautiful. Understated at first, and also, surprisingly accessible, the 1999 Comtes de Champagne backs up its open, inviting personality with considerable muscle married to vibrant, pure fruit. The long, polished finish bursts with Chardonnay character. As is often the case, Comtes is at its best when it has been opened for at least 1-2 hours, or, even better, with a decade or more of bottle age. This is going to be a fascinating Comtes to follow in the coming years and decades. This is Lot L8283UI00600, disgorged August/September, 2008 (not indicated on label).

A Family Business

The Taittinger family have been running their eponymous Champagne house since 1932. One of the last family-owned houses in Reims, the brand has a reputation for quality-driven vintage and non-vintage Champagnes. Sourcing fruit from over 35 vineyards sites, the team produce a range of styles including an elegant non-vintage, two sweeter Champagnes in the form of Nocturne and Demi-Sec and a Grand Cru-based non-vintage.

The Taittinger family's Prestige Cuvée is Comtes de Champagne, first produced in 1952. This Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) is produced using fruit from five different Grand Cru sites across the Côte de Blancs. An aromatic, full-bodied Champagne with notes of citrus oil and green apple in youth, Comtes de Champagne ages superbly, with time in the bottle revealing notes of toasted hazelnut and a creamy richness.
