The origins of Taittinger Comtes de Champagne trace back to the 1950s. It was created by Pierre Taittinger, who was captivated by the idea of crafting an extraordinary cuvée exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. The first vintage of Taittinger Comtes de Champagne was produced in 1952 and released in 1957. Since then, it has become a hallmark of excellence in the world of champagne. The 1998 vintage is currently showing an expressive nose and palate with plenty of autolysis notes. caramel, toffee, brioche and macadamia nuts, all beautifully complemented by a fresh citrus fruit core.

The 1998 Comtes de Champagne is a different story altogether. This is a sexy, up-front Comtes endowed with lovely richness in its fruit and open, expressive aromatics. It remains an impressive, inviting Comtes that should also continue to develop nicely in the bottle for at least another decade plus. Antonio Galloni1st August 2010

A Family Business

The Taittinger family have been running their eponymous Champagne house since 1932. One of the last family-owned houses in Reims, the brand has a reputation for quality-driven vintage and non-vintage Champagnes. Sourcing fruit from over 35 vineyards sites, the team produce a range of styles including an elegant non-vintage, two sweeter Champagnes in the form of Nocturne and Demi-Sec and a Grand Cru-based non-vintage.

The Taittinger family's Prestige Cuvée is Comtes de Champagne, first produced in 1952. This Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) is produced using fruit from five different Grand Cru sites across the Côte de Blancs. An aromatic, full-bodied Champagne with notes of citrus oil and green apple in youth, Comtes de Champagne ages superbly, with time in the bottle revealing notes of toasted hazelnut and a creamy richness.
