Taittinger Comtes de Champagne 1993 is a vintage prestige-cuvée Champagne produced by Champagne Taittinger in Reims, France. Chardonnay is Taittinger’s hallmark, and the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs is where the grape expresses its full potential. Only released in exceptionally good vintages, it is made entirely from grapes sourced from the best vineyard sites in the Côte des Blancs and Montange de Reims. On the 1993 vintage. "This was the underdog triumph of the tasting. It may have been rated as an average vintage, but the 1993 was a real beauty, equal to the 1995 but in a different style. The colour is surprisingly youthful, with a bright glow. This is so Chablis-like, with its citrus and lime aromas and a flinty minerality. It`s one of the freshest champagnes at the tasting, more feminine in style than most, with a fine acidity and a precise, linear structure. A complex wine with great energy and a prickling mousse." The two 1993s provide a fascinating opportunity to compare original release and RD bottles of the same vintage. The 1993 Comtes de Champagne (original release) comes across as a touch fat and lacking freshness. Truffles, autumn leaves and mushrooms are some of the tertiary nuances that emerge from this mature Champagne. Antonio Galloni1st August 2010

A Family Business

The Taittinger family have been running their eponymous Champagne house since 1932. One of the last family-owned houses in Reims, the brand has a reputation for quality-driven vintage and non-vintage Champagnes. Sourcing fruit from over 35 vineyards sites, the team produce a range of styles including an elegant non-vintage, two sweeter Champagnes in the form of Nocturne and Demi-Sec and a Grand Cru-based non-vintage.

The Taittinger family's Prestige Cuvée is Comtes de Champagne, first produced in 1952. This Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) is produced using fruit from five different Grand Cru sites across the Côte de Blancs. An aromatic, full-bodied Champagne with notes of citrus oil and green apple in youth, Comtes de Champagne ages superbly, with time in the bottle revealing notes of toasted hazelnut and a creamy richness.
