Stags Leap Cellars is a renowned Napa Valley producer, famous for its role in the, now legendary, 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting which put California wines on the global map.

Fay Vinyard is where pioneering grape grower Nathen Fay planted Cabernet in 1961 despite controversial ‘wisdom’ from others, that the area was too cold for the varietal. Tasting Fay’s 1968 homemade Cabernet, in 1969, was a defining moment for Stag Leap Cellars founder Warren Winiarski, this is truly where Stags Leap was born.

Purchased by Stags Leap in 1986, Fay vineyard soils are in separate parts, rocky, volcanic and alluvial. Producing perfumed, voluptuous fruit with elegant tannins.

The 1997 vintage is 94.88% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 5.02% Merlot and 0.10% Petite Verdot, 22 months in French Oak. Producer note on this vintage. “The aromas are lavish, evocative of ripe loganberry, black currant, crushed lavender and French vanilla bean. A supple entry of resonating fruit, spice, oak highlights and tannins caress the tongue long after the wine is swallowed, creating pure enchantment.”

Full medium ruby. Aromas of plum, chocolate and tobacco leaf, plus a note of scotch from the wood. Dense and layered, with truffle and oak components and a suggestion of wet wood. I get ripe fruit here, but also a nagging green quality that dries the finish.
