Stags Leap Cellars is a renowned Napa Valley producer, famous for its role in the, now legendary, 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting which put California wines on the global map.

Cask 23 is a blend of fruit from the two flagship vineyards, SLV and Fay. The exact portion from each vineyard varies with each year.

2001 was a legendary vintage in Napa, however due to ongoing new plantings SLV’s production was the smallest in many years. The resulting fruit though was so expressive it resulted in 63% of the final blend. 95.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3.8% Merlot and 0.03% Petit Verdot, 21 months in French oak.

Producer note on the 2001 “Pouring this wine is like letting a genie out of the bottle. it gets bigger and bigger as the wine`s depth and breadth gradually reveal themselves. In the nose, you`ll notice berries, rosemary, and cardamom, while the palate fills with bright and creamy flavors of black plum, black olive, truffle, even a hint of chocolate-covered cherry. The smooth, very approachable entry reveals a luscious core of fruit down the center, while additional flavors fan out as the wine evolves in the mouth. The very long finish resonates like beautiful music-this wine just doesn`t stop!”

- Dark ruby-red. Ripe aromas of currant, sassafras, bitter chocolate, cured meat and menthol. At once sweet and green in the mouth. The dark fruit and earthy flavors are given a dry edge by the wine's strong menthol and herbal elements. And yet this concentrated, extremely backward wine has a distinct roundness and sweetness in the middle. Finishes quite dry and persistent, in need of at least five or six years of aging. - Dark ruby-red. Ripe aromas of currant, sassafras, bitter chocolate, cured meat and menthol.
