St Joseph Les Granits Chapoutier 1999 showcases a thoughtful approach to viticulture. This wine is crafted primarily from Syrah, drawn from the region`s steep, granite slopes, which lend structure to the expression. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, and vinification involves traditional techniques. Whole grape pressing is followed by a period of cold settling. Fermentation occurs in a mix of stainless steel and large wooden barrels, facilitating complex flavour development. The wine is then aged on lees for 12 months, enhancing its depth. Chapoutier is renowned for its commitment to biodynamic practices, reflecting their respect for terroir.

Medium ruby. Perfumed, complex aromas of sappy raspberry, spicy oak, violet face powder and crushed stone. Juicy, tight and high-pitched, with terrific delineation and inner-mouth perfume. Firmly structured and long on the aftertaste. Very granitic wine.

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
