St Joseph Le Clos Chapoutier 2012 is a single-vineyard Syrah from a steep, granite-based site in the Northern Rhône, farmed biodynamically by the legendary house of Chapoutier. This 2012 bottling showcases the elegance of the vintage, offering a refined nose of cracked pepper, smoked meat and dark berry fruit. Unlike the brawnier wines of Hermitage, this St Joseph is defined by its silkiness and purity of fruit, with the granite soil providing a distinct mineral tension. The wine was aged in a combination of new and used oak to maintain its aromatic lift and textural finesse. It stands as a sophisticated expression of the region, emphasising terroir over power and offering immediate drinking pleasure.

In complete contrast to the sexy, flamboyant les Granits, the tiny production 2012 Saint Joseph le Clos (which comes from a vineyard just a couple kilometers from the les Granits) is firm, tight and structured, with edgy notes of cassis, blackberry, powdered rock and ground herbs. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich, it needs 3-4 years in the cellar, and will have two decades of longevity. This is almost non-existent in the marketplace, but it`s worth the effort to track down.

Saturated ruby. Strongly perfumed aromas of blackberry, blueberry, violet, black cardamom and minerals. Seamless, expansive and sweet on the palate, offering deeply concentrated dark berry compote and cola flavors and a hint of star anise on the back half. Gains richness with air and finishes extremely long, with building tannins and clinging mineral and floral notes. Here's a Saint-Joseph that can stand up to plenty of Hermitages.Josh Raynolds1st February 2015

Bought and replanted 18 years ago. Clos near Tournon cemetery. Very savoury and direct. Pure fruit and pure open sunny north Rhône Syrah. Even smoother than Granits Rouge. Real lift and freshness on the finish after a very satisfying palate. (JR)Jancis Robinson10th May 2013

Passion and Drive

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
