Spottswoode Estate was created in 1882 but it was only a century later in 1982 that Mary and Jack Novak released their first Cabernet Sauvignon. Since that inaugural vintage they have cemented a reputation as once of the finest producers in California, renowned for their incredibly high quality and remarkably consistent Bordeaux blends.
This is the flagship wine and is their ultimate expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from their organically farmed estate vineyard. From the exceptional 2016 vintage, this is a staggering vintage of prodigious quality. It is rich, powerful and textural, exhibiting seamless balance throughout and a finish of quite remarkable length and complexity. A sensational wine with a near 40-year potential lifespan.

Spottswoode's 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely gorgeous. Medium in body, translucent and super-expressive, the 2016 is sublime, not to mention on the understated side of things for the year. Dark red cherry, red plum, mocha and espresso add lovely shades of nuance. The 2016 is racy, but also clearly holding back much of its ultimate potential. I imagine the 2016 will always be a wine of finesse, first and foremost.Antonio Galloni1st January 2020

85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, aged 20 months in 60% new French oak barrels. Farmed organically since 1985 (certified 1992) and now embraces biodynamic principles.Brambly and peppery on the nose, this is spicy, complex and enticing. The palate is fleshy and rounded, with waves of black fruit balanced by fine-grained tannins and bright acidic lift. This tightens on the back end, with good length but quite toasty oak at this stage. It should knit together very well, offering generous fruit but fine balance. (TP)
