Spottswoode Estate was created in 1882 but it was only a century later in 1982 that Mary and Jack Novak released their first Cabernet Sauvignon. Since that inaugural vintage they have cemented a reputation as once of the finest producers in California, renowned for their incredibly high quality and remarkably consistent Bordeaux blends.

This is the flagship wine and is their ultimate expression of Cabernet Sauvignon from their organically farmed estate vineyard. The 1997 is a stunning release now in its prime drinking window. Still abundant with fruit, it is now developing delicious savoury character, with notes of forest leaves, leather, mushroom and olive tapenade.

94 Vinous
Deep, bright ruby. Very ripe but reduced nose shows a chocolatey ripeness to the primary flavors of cassis, blueberry and licorice. Densely packed and powerful, conveying a tactile texture to the sweet flavors of black fruits, tobacco and spice cake. Firm acidity gives clarity and definition to the middle palate of this very concentrated wine. Finishes savory, deeply spicy and firmly tannic, with terrific length and grip. Considerably fresher and better balanced than a bottle I tasted for my Spottswoode vertical last year.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2017
