Sorì San Lorenzo 1989 is Nebbiolo red from the Langhe. Massive tannins and deep fruit concentration celebrate this legendary Piedmontese year, which remains a reference point for the region. This single-vineyard bottling exhibits a profound profile of black cherries, tar, liquorice and dried flowers. Now fully mature, the tannins have resolved into a fine-grained texture, though the wine retains its characteristic structural grip and aromatic height. It possesses a vertical structure and a long, balsamic finish that reflects the technical precision of Angelo Gaja and the unique terroir of the Barbaresco region.

Sweet dark cherries, plums, spices, mint and tobacco all lift from the glass in the 1989 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo. Incredibly perfumed and layered in the glass, the 1989 captures the essence of this great Piedmont vintage in its soaring aromatics, inner sweetness and extraordinary balance. Tasting the 1989 today brings back memories of an unforgettable night a few years ago when I tasted all of the 1989s and 1990s together here. Simply put, the 1989 Sorì San Lorenzo is a total stunner. Deep ruby with orange rim. Balsamic and a little lifted on the nose. Notes of dried fruit with a hint of oak and really animating. Just a tiny bit of oxidation, then focused, long and velvety. Plain gorgeous. (WS)

From Turin to Tuscany

The Gaja Winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. One of Italy’s most renowned and dynamic wineries, Gaja first established its world-class reputation with the powerful reds it produced in the region of Piemonte in Northwestern Italy.

A key figure was Angelo Gaja, who took over the running of the estate in 1970 and sought to showcase the best that the Nebbiolo grape could produce with stellar Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The estate produces unique white wines too, such as the marvellous single varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Alteni di Brassica.

Gaja is also a leading name in Tuscany, having diversified into the production of Brunello and Super Tuscan wines. The Gaja family have owned the Pieve Santa Restituta estate since 1994 from which they produce two single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino wines, Rennina and Sugarille. In 1996, Angelo Gaja purchased the Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri.
