Sociando-Mallet 1966 is a mature-vintage, Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the Haut-Médoc appellation of Bordeaux. A standard-setting Cru Bourgeois estate, Château Sociando-Mallet produces full-bodied wines with a deep, dark colour. Their complex bouquet is usually dominated by black fruit aromas with a touch of minerality and well-integrated, elegant oak. "This is one of the most must-try wines in this lineup because it absolutely stands up next to these Pauillac classified properties, and delivers on so much that is enjoyable about the 1996 vintage. Crème de cassis, chocolate and rich black fruits with finely-bonded open tannins. At its plateau, with tertiary notes of undergrowth and tobacco leaf, but this has another decade ahead of it easily, and is a signature Médoc Cabernet." Decanter, 2021

The 1996 Lafon-Rochet shows slight bricking on the rim. It's a little rustic with black fruit, sandalwood, and sage on the nose, but this is certainly showing good vigor after 25 years. The palate is balanced with tannins, a little "sauvage" now, mushroom and mint, fennel and black tea, a slight dryness creeping in at the finish but a perfect Englishman’s Claret to drink now because it has evolved a lot in the last five years. Tasted at the Lafon-Rochet vertical at the property.Neal Martin1st June 2023
