The 1998 Smith Haut Lafitte was the vintage that signified a property that was about to be rejuvenated under Florance and Daniel Cathiard, although there was still a long way to go. Now at 20 years old, perhaps it is beginning to show its age on the nose and it has far less fruit, the aromatics dominated by cigar box and tertiary, almost leathery scents. But there is freshness here and it is almost like a Médoc in style. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannin on the entry, a little dry in the mouth with a touch of attenuation towards the finish. Having not tasted this before, I hazard a guess that it may have peaked around a decade ago, so why not pop open any bottles you might have? Tasted at the château. Neal Martin1st May 2018

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
