Sloan Proprietary Red 2002 is a cult Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend from the Sloan estate in Rutherford, Napa Valley. This release is a benchmark for the power and opulence of the year, featuring fruit from high-density plantings on the estate`s steep hillsides. It offers a dense and concentrated bouquet of crème de cassis, espresso and toasted oak, followed by a palate of immense structural depth and silky tannins. The wine was produced under the guidance of world-renowned consultant David Abreu and winemaker Martha McClellan. Now fully mature, it retains a remarkable freshness while displaying the complex tertiary notes of a perfectly aged Napa red.

Saturated ruby. Rich, superripe, captivating aromas of black cherry, chocolate, truffle, earth and sexy oak spices. Impressively supple, rich and seamless, like a liquid confection. This is almost too big for the mouth and yet there's no impression of excess weight. Finishes with wonderfully sweet, palate-dusting tannins and slow-building length. Perhaps atypically sweet for a wine from this property but I'm not complaining. This almost made the excellent '01 seem lean in comparison.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2007
