The 1980 Siran was my own contribution to the dinner, a bottle that proprietor Edouard Miailhe had sent unsolicited, promising that it was far better than you would imagine given the vintage. Would I dare pour it with some of the most ruthless palates in the business? Well, Miailhe was dead on. Mature in colour, it has a lovely cigar box, mulch and chlorophyll-scented bouquet that is far fresher than I could have ever envisaged. The palate is light but clean and fresh, quite saline and oddly, reminiscent of a Saint-Julien. A bit short maybe, but a couple of people approached me afterwards, astonished by its quality. Tasted at the "Judgement of Clapham Junction" dinner in London. Neal Martin1st March 2022
