A blend featuring 50% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 14% Petite Sirah, 12% Syrah, 6% Graciano, and 3% Viognier, this red wine hails from California`s Los Alamos estate vineyard, crafted by winemaker Manfred Krankl. The 2016 vintage exhibits an alcohol content of 15.6%. Aged for 31 months in French oak, with 34% new wood, the wine reveals aromas of red raspberries, white pepper, and dried herbs, showcasing a transparent, spicy character distinct from typical Syrah blends. The sandy soils of the vineyard contribute to the balance between high alcohol and vibrant aromatics, highlighting the estate`s focus on Mediterranean grape varieties.

The 2016 The Third Twin Graciano seems to be especially well-suited to Manfred and Elaine Krankl`s Three Twins site. The 2016 is another fabulous edition. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice, menthol and spice flesh out in a sumptuous, beautifully textured wine that hits all the right notes. Dollops of Mourvèdre and Petite Sirah round out the blend. The 2016 is vibrant, explosive and flat-out stunning. Wow!Antonio Galloni1st September 2019

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
