Sine Qua Non was officially founded in 1994 by Manfred and Elaine Krankl and rapidly garnered remarkable critical acclaim for their exceptionally limited production wines made from classical Rhône Valley varieties. Older vintages of Sine Qua Non are now incredibly rare and just 424 cases of the 1995 The Other Hand Syrah were produced. It is 100% Syrah sourced from the Alban, Stolpman and Bien Nacido vineyards, aged for 18 months in 70% new oak.

Brighter ruby-red color. Wilder aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, game, leather, tobacco and licorice. Lush and packed with fruit; as seamless as the above but with a firmer structure and not quite as forthcoming today. But finishes extremely long, with very fine tannins. This was explosive after 24 hours in the open bottle. These extraordinary wines from Manfred Krankl, owner of Campanile restaurant in Los Angeles, have virtually disappeared from the retail market, but fans of the finest California wines from Rhone grapes should add their names to the mailing list (805-640-0997).Stephen Tanzer1st May 1998

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
