Sine Qua Non Next of Kyn No 11 2017 is a powerful and opulent Syrah-based blend from the Krankl family in Central Coast, California. Characterised by dark fruit density and a silken tannic frame, the wine uses fruit sourced from the Cumulus Vineyard in Oak View where the warm climate allows for the development of extreme phenolic ripeness and a velvety texture. This bottling features an array of blackberry, woodsmoke and lavender with a seamless integration of French oak that supports the massive scale of the wine.
97 Robert Parker
This cuvée comes entirely from the Krankl’s “home” vineyard—the Cumulus vineyard in Oak View, just south and inland from Santa Barbara, on the road to Ojai. There are now just over 12.5 acres planted at Cumulus. The first plantings of Syrah, Grenache and Roussanne took place in 2004. A little more Grenache was planted in 2005. Then in 2008, small blocks of Petite Manseng, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Mourvedre and Petite Sirah were added, including 3.5 acres on its own roots. The 2017 Cumulus Vineyard No. 11 is composed of 48% Syrah, 24.8% Grenache, 10.6% Petite Sirah, 12.7% Mourvèdre, 2.2% Petit Manseng and 1.7% Roussanne, using 23% whole clusters. It spent around 33 months in French oak barrels, 68% new. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
