Sine Qua Non is one of the most famous cult wineries in the world and winemaker, Manfred Krankl, is celebrated for crafting tiny quantities of unique Rhône-inspired wines from exceptional vineyards across the Californian Central Coast. The 2015 Grenache Le Chemin Vers l’Heresie is a hedonistic but gloriously vivacious blend of 75% Grenache, 13% Mourvèdre, 8% Touriga Nacional and 4% Petite Sirah. Wonderfully full-bodied, rich and intense, this wine is awash with sumptuous black fruits, dried flower perfume and smoky savoury depth. As ever with SQN wines there is abundant youthful charm but a short spell in the cellar will undoubtedly be rewarded.

The 2015 Grenache Le Chemin vers l'Hérésie is a dense, powerful wine that captures the natural richness of the year in spades. Dark, potent and brooding, the 2015 hits the palate with serious depth and resonance. This is an especially dark, somber vintage for the Grenache. The 2015 is going to need at least a few years to shed some of its baby fat and recover from its relatively recent bottling. I found the 2015 a bit more expressive from barrel, but that is hardly surprising given that the wine was bottled just a few weeks before this tasting. Antonio Galloni1st September 2018

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
