Sine Qua Non was founded in the early 90s by pioneering winemaker Manfred Krankl and rapidly became a world-famous winery revered for producing miniscule quantities of unique, but astonishingly high quality, Rhône Valley-inspired wines. A beautifully concentrated red wine, the 2002 vintage is composed of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier. Floral and blackcurrant notes mingle with expresso and charcoal complexity. Magnificently opulent and sold here in rare magnum format.

Saturated, bright ruby-red. Slightly high-toned, ineffably complex nose combines red and black fruits, smoked bacon, herbs, minerals, licorice, violet and gingerbread-is this syrah or what? Wonderfully concentrated and bright, showing an almost confectionery sweetness to its primary black fruit, brown spice and fruitcake flavors. The wine's great verve and intensity, along with its extraordinary length, suggest that it will enjoy a leisurely evolution in bottle. This wine was bottled in mid-May of this year, which means it spent 43 months in barrel.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2006

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
