The 2018 Eleven Confessions Vineyard Syrah is a blend of 82% Syrah, 10.6% Grenache, 5.3% Petite Syrah and 2.1% Viognier, made entirely of estate fruit. The grapes come from Sine Qua Non`s estate vineyard, Eleven Confessions, located in the Santa Rita Hills appellation of Santa Barbara County. The cool, maritime-influenced climate of this region contributes to the elegance and balance of the wines produced here. The vineyard`s sandy loam soils add complexity to the wine. It is a rich, full-bodied expression, boasting notes of blackberries, blueberries, and black cherries, along with hints of black pepper, smoked meat, leather, and liquorice.

The 2018 Syrah Eleven Confessions Vineyard is slow to unfold but stunning once it opens, featuring layered aromas of cassis, coffee beans, garrigue and cracked pepper before segueing to soaring floral perfume. A blend of 82% Syrah, 10.6% Grenache, 5.3% Petite Sirah and 2.1% Viognier, it's made entirely of estate fruit. It was fermented with 28% whole clusters and matured about 38 months in 50% new French oak. It has an opaque ruby-purple in color, and the palate is full-bodied, powerful and seamless, boasting powdery tannins and integrated acidity. It has a concentrated core of floral fruit and a tremendously long finish. It was bottled on December 15, 2021, and tasted May 24, 2022. 978 cases and 276 magnums will be released in the fall of 2022. — Erin Brooks, 31st May 2022

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
