Sine Qua Non is the creation of pioneering winemaker, Manfred Krankl, and is a world-famous cult winery revered for producing miniscule quantities of unique Rhône-inspired wines from some of the greatest vineyards across the Central Coast. Krankl’s wines always have a story to tell and the 1998 E-Raised Syrah was created in response to critics of the winery who had suggested his wines and quirky labels were merely gimmicks and that they needed to focus solely on the wine. With a uniquely blank label design, this is a sublime Syrah with intense dark fruit notes, now wonderfully complemented by savoury accents of woodsmoke, black pepper, espresso and griddled herbs.

Deep ruby-red. Sappy cherry, espresso, graphite, bacon fat and lovely spicy lift on the vibrant nose. Superripe, highly concentrated, penetrating flavors of crushed berry seed and oak. With extended aeration this wine showed more complex black raspberry and wood smoke flavors and a more pliant texture without any loss of shape or grip. Quite juicy for a syrah with 15% alcohol. Boasts fruit of steel, and a very long firm finish.Stephen Tanzer1st November 2000

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
