Sine Qua Non is a cult winery in California that is known for its wines made from blends of Rhône grape varietals. The winery is located in Ventura County and was founded in 1993 by Austrian-born winemaker Manfred Krankl. The name of the winery, Sine Qua Non, is a Latin phrase that can be translated as ‘absolutely indispensable’. The 2020 Syrah Distenta is a full-bodied, concentrated and remarkably balanced wine based on 83% Syrah, with Grenache, Mourvèdre, Petite Sirah, Muscat, and Petit Manseng making up the rest of the blend. The wine was fermented with 16% whole clusters and matured for 23 months in 66% new French oak.

The 2020 Syrah Distenta II is a blend of 82.9% Syrah, 7.5% Grenache, 3.9% Mourvedre, 3.4% Petite Sirah, 1.5% Muscat, and 0.8% Petit Manseng. The vineyard sources are The Third Twin (43%), Eleven Confessions (32%), Cumulus (21%), and Molly Aïda (3%)—all estate-owned vineyards. The fermentation included 16% whole clusters, and it was aged for 23 months in 66% new French oak. Gregarious scents of charcoal, lilacs, licorice, and boysenberry preserves swan out of the glass, giving way to hints of wild sage, fragrant earth, and tapenade. The full-bodied palate is bright, pure, and shimmery, delivering a firm frame of fine-grained tannins and bags of freshness, finishing long and minerally. It was bottled in July 2022. 2,000 cases and 600 magnums were made.Lisa Perrotti-Brown29th August 2023

The 2020 Syrah Distenta II is outrageously beautiful. Dark and enveloping, the 2020 offers up compelling aromatics, dark, almost somber fruit, and exceptional balance. Broad, chocolatey tannins wrap it all together. Readers will find a super-classic Sine Qua Non Syrah.Antonio Galloni1st September 2023

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
