Sine Qua Non is a highly acclaimed cult wine label based in California. Founded by winemaker Manfred Krankl and his wife Elaine, the winery has gained a legendary reputation for producing exceptionally limited and sought-after wines. The 2020 Grenache Distenta is a blend of mostly 78% Grenache and the rest Mourvèdre, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and a tiny splash of Viognier. The wine was matured for approximately 23 months in 52% new French oak and demi-muids. Presented here in a fabulous magnum bottle.
99 The Wine Independent
The 2020 Grenache Distenta II is a blend of 77.9% Grenache, 9.4% Mourvedre, 7.9% Syrah, 4.3% Petite Sirah, and 0.5% Viognier. The vineyard sources are Eleven Confessions (40%), Cumulus (33%), The Third Twin (21%), and Molly Aïda (6%)—all estate-owned vineyards. The fermentation included 29.1% of whole clusters. It was aged for around 23 months in French oak barrels of various sizes, 52.1% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, gregarious notes of ripe black plums, blackberry pie, and charcoal jump from the glass, giving way to the perfume of violets, cinnamon toast, and fertile loam with a touch of underbrush. The palate is bold, super-concentrated, full-bodied and impactful, delivering fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and spicy. 1,650 cases and 600 magnums were made.Lisa Perrotti-Brown29th August 2023

The 2020 Grenache Distenta II is a dense, powerful wine. A blast of dark cherry, plum, espresso, menthol, licorice and cloves hits the palate. This rich, heady Grenache delivers the goods. In a vintage that was so hard for Grenache, Elaine and Manfred Krankl found the way to craft a memorable wine. All this needs is time.Antonio Galloni1st September 2023

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
