Sine Qua Non is the creation of pioneering winemaker, Manfred Krankl, and is a world-famous cult winery revered for producing miniscule quantities of unique Rhône-inspired wines using estate-grown and purchased fruit from some of the greatest vineyards across the Central Coast. 2011 was a complex vintage for many but Krankl’s Dark Blossom releases really showcase the extraordinary fruit quality and exceptional winemaking skill at SQN. Composed of 84% Syrah, 8% Grenache, 4% Petite Sirah and 4% Roussanne, this is full-bodied, intense and remarkably complex. Initial bursts of seductive black fruits segue to savoury nuances of black pepper, woodsmoke and dried flowers. Effortless and superbly crafted, this will continue to drink well for at least the next decade.

The 2011 Syrah Dark Blossom is dark, mysterious and wonderfully inviting. Black fruit, savory herbs, leather and spice meld together in a deep, dense wine that is constantly changing in the glass. Savory overtones add intrigue. The firm, muscular 2011 tannins are going to need time to soften. Readers lucky enough to find the 2011 can look forward to years of thrilling drinking,Antonio Galloni1st July 2014

Art and Fine Wine Collide

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
