Shafer Hillside Select 1989 is a collectible Cabernet Sauvignon from the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, California. Shafer`s Hillside Select is exclusively sourced from steeply sloped vineyards, known for their lean volcanic soils which contribute intensity and structure. The 1989 vintage, considered a strong year in Napa, produced wines with depth and concentration. This mature release exhibits a rich bouquet of concentrated blackcurrant, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf and cedar spice. The palate is full-bodied, dense and structured, showcasing intense dark fruit, balanced by mature, fine-grained tannins and a long, seamless finish.

The first wine of a new era, the 1989 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is the finest produced since the debut vintage in 1978. It still reveals a deep ruby/plum/garnet color to the rim as well as notes of graphite, cedarwood, blackcurrants and forest floor. Medium-bodied with excellent richness, soft tannins and an authoritative finish, it was a revelation in a vintage I generally do not find appealing.Robert Parker30th December 2014

A Family Tradition

An icon of modern winemaking in the Napa Valley, Shafer Vineyards was founded in 1972 by John Shafer, who left a career in publishing to pursue his passion for oenology in California. John and family moved into an estate in Stag's Leap District and began work re-establishing vineyards on the surrounding land. Around five years later, the first Cabernet Sauvignon was produced and it was clear that John had a natural talent for winemaking. Since then, the portfolio has expanded to include Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay-based wines to name but a few - quality is high across the board and the team pay close attention to preserving varietal character across all bottlings.

John sadly passed away in 2019 and the winery is now managed by his son Doug - a graduate of UC Davis. Doug continues his father's work in partnership with Elias Fernandez, assistant winemaker at Shafer Vineyards. Their flagship wine is Hillside Select, produced using 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for 32 months in new French oak.
