Serradelo Adega Algueira 2015 is a full-bodied Mencía red wine from the Ribeira Sacra region. The wine undergoes traditional winemaking methods, with foot-treading in open wooden vats and fermentation using native yeasts. It is aged for a minimum of 12 months in old French oak barrels. It reveals notes of dark cherry, herbal undertones and a hint of earthiness, combined with a firm acidity and minerality. Adega Algueira is recognised for its commitment to preserving native Galician varieties through its terroir-focused range of wines.

The old Brancellao (also known as Albarello in other parts of Galicia) bottling has been renamed and is now the 2015 Serradelo. It`s a pale, fragrant and aromatic light red with an earthy, somewhat rustic touch reminiscent of leather and licorice and a core of wild red berries and herbs that make it quite complex and attractive. The palate shows some earthiness and a faint animal-like twist that I`ve also seen in other vintages. It has a strong personality, perhaps not for everybody.

Brilliant violet color. An expressive bouquet evokes ripe, mineral-tinged red/blue fruits, incense and candied flowers. A suggestion of smoked meat emerges with air. Chewy, focused and appealingly sweet, offering juicy black raspberry and violet pastille flavors and a hint of licorice and spicecake. Finishes gently tannic with impressive tenacity, leaving an echo of smokiness behind. There's something northern Rhône-like going on here. (Raised in neutral French oak barrels.)
