Seresin Sun & Moon Pinot Noir 2016 is a single-vineyard wine from the Raupo vineyard in Marlborough, New Zealand. This Pinot Noir is crafted from a small parcel of vines, with yields deliberately reduced to less than one bottle per vine to enhance concentration. Handpicked and fully destemmed, the grapes undergo fermentation using wild yeast, reflecting the terroir. Characterised by savoury nuances, it displays a complex structure supported by supple tannins, offering a balance of power and elegance. Seresin Estate is known for its commitment to organic and biodynamic practices, aligning with the philosophy of the founder, prominent cinematographer Michael Seresin.

The 2016 Sun and Moon Pinot Noir is a savory, earthy affair, with forest undergrowth, fresh leather, pomegranate molasses and black cherry. In the mouth, it leads with enoki mushroom, hints of red miso, black peppercorns, tobacco and bay leaf. Sandalwood or myrrh eddy about in the background. This is a wonderful wine with firm tannins that convey elegance rather than brawn. It`s the sapid and quenching mid-palate that really gets me. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

It's rare to be sent an eight-year-old Pinot Noir for your new releases report, but I'm not going to argue. It's great to experience the evolution of a wine, particularly the flagship Pinot Noir Sun & Moon. The 2016 has shed its primary youth for a more earthy, savory perspective. There's a hint of volatility on the nose, but it's not the main event, and coupled with some red cherry flavor, this lends it an Italian-esque nuance. It is full-bodied, smooth and suave. It's quiet in terms of flavor but entices you with its texture and caress before its natural acidity bursts forth. There remains a real grip of mouthcoating tannins, which cry out for a delicious plate of game or hard, mature cheese. It's long on the finish with the lingering scent of tea leaves and damson skin. At a beautiful stage in its development, although it can go for at least the rest of the decade, showing Marlborough Pinot Noir should be taken more seriously. The 2016 is organic, biodynamic, unfined and unfiltered. Rebecca Gibb14th May 2024
