Sena 1996 is a red wine from the Aconcagua Valley in Chile, marking an important milestone in a partnership between renowned vintners Robert Mondavi and Eduardo Chadwick. This blend predominantly features Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and Carmenère, achieving an alcohol content of 13.5%. Aged for 16 months in new French oak barrels, the wine exhibits notes of blackberries, tobacco, and a subtle herbal character indicative of the region. This vintage played a crucial role in positioning Chile as a producer of fine wines, prioritising balance and complexity. With integrated tannins, Sena 1996 offers a depth that can compete with distinguished Bordeaux from the same period.

The 1996 Seña, the house’s second vintage, is indicative of a relatively cool year in which the blend was 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Carménère, aged for 15 months in new barrels. Garnet red in color. The delicate nose presents notes of herb and hints of blackcurrant jam, gentle sour cherry notes, leather, caramel and a whiff of licorice. In the mouth it has a mild energy with polished tannins that get the best out of the nimble, vibrant freshness before the lengthy finish of dried flowers. A key factor in the balance is the mild 12.7% alcohol. Tasted twice, the first bottle was over the hill.Joaquin Hidalgo3rd August 2022

Dark ruby with rust-coloured rim. Dusty cocoa-powder nose and a hint of mint. Losing fruit and guts but well mannered. Now this is a bit simple and veering towards gaminess. Tim Mondavi was involved, keen to make elegant style. (JR)
