Produced from 100% hand harvested Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown on the J.J. Cohn Estate. Winemaker Celia Welch describes the 2012 vintage as follows, `Crafted from the oldest, most balanced and most intensely flavorful Cabernet lots grown on the J. J. Cohn Estate, this impressive wine shows dark aromas of spiced plums, blackberries, mocha and cassis. Its dark complexity is equally evident on the palate, where the wine is at once refreshing and somewhat mysterious. The layers of complex flavors reveal themselves with time in the glass, shifting and swirling between bright fruit and dark vanilla/caramel tones.`

A compelling, exotic beauty, the 2012 Scarecrow impresses for its power and intensity. White flowers, spices and new leather wrap around a core of dark fruit as this imposing, structured Cabernet Sauvignon opens up in the glass. The 2012 needs time in bottle to drop some baby fat and develop more aromatic nuance, but it is absolutely captivating, even today. Antonio Galloni1st December 2014

A New Name in a Historic Vineyard

The J.J. Cohn Estate that produces Scarecrow borders what was once the legendary vineyard of Inglenook winemaker Gustave Niebaum. In 1945, the then owner John Daniel convinced his neighbour, J.J. Cohn, to plant eighty acres of Cabernet vines on the 180-acre parcel Cohn had purchased a few years prior.

The property served as a summer retreat for Cohn’s wife and their family and J. J had no ambitions to become a winemaker himself, but Daniel promised to buy his grapes, so Cohn planted vines. J.J. Cohn fruit figured prominently in Inglenook’s superlative Cabernet Sauvignons of the post-war era, and has more recently gone into wines of such renown as Opus One, Niebaum-Coppola, Duckhorn, Insignia and Etude. This is an estate with a formidable pedigree that continues to make some of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa. The winemaker is Celia Welch - one of Napa's most experienced.
