Scarecrow is a highly coveted California wine label known for producing exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon from old vines planted in the Rutherford AVA. The vineyard`s history dates back to the 1940s, when it was owned by J.J. Cohn, a prominent figure in Hollywood`s golden era and the vineyard has remained with the Cohn family since. The 2013 vintage was an outstanding year in Napa Valley, characterized by excellent weather conditions that allowed for optimal ripening of the fruit. The result was highly concentrated and expressive wines with great aging potential. A prized addition to any cellar.

The 2013 Scarecrow is magnificent. Rich, opulent and intense, the 2013 is a prototypical modern Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with tons of ripeness, no hard edges and exceptional polish. A host of ferrous, savory notes abound, but as usual here, Scarecrow is really about the whole package. The 2013 is still recovering from its recent bottling, but it is pretty special, even at this early stage.Antonio Galloni1st October 2015

A New Name in a Historic Vineyard

The J.J. Cohn Estate that produces Scarecrow borders what was once the legendary vineyard of Inglenook winemaker Gustave Niebaum. In 1945, the then owner John Daniel convinced his neighbour, J.J. Cohn, to plant eighty acres of Cabernet vines on the 180-acre parcel Cohn had purchased a few years prior.

The property served as a summer retreat for Cohn’s wife and their family and J. J had no ambitions to become a winemaker himself, but Daniel promised to buy his grapes, so Cohn planted vines. J.J. Cohn fruit figured prominently in Inglenook’s superlative Cabernet Sauvignons of the post-war era, and has more recently gone into wines of such renown as Opus One, Niebaum-Coppola, Duckhorn, Insignia and Etude. This is an estate with a formidable pedigree that continues to make some of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa. The winemaker is Celia Welch - one of Napa's most experienced.
