Scarecrow was first released in 2003 and is an ultra-premium Cabernet Sauvignon from old dry-farmed vines on the J. J. Cohn Estate in Rutherford, most of which was planted in 1945. The 2011 vintage in Napa was challenging for many but winemaker, Celia Welch, has produced a stunning, Bordeaux-esque wine. On the nose it is intensely perfumed with notes of dark cherry, cassis, vanilla, jasmine and crushed rose petals. The palate is rich, silky and broad, with superb complexity and grace. A brilliant example of how vineyard pedigree and intelligent winemaking can still produce thrilling wines.

The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. Though I am not surprised, as the 2011 was magnificent from the outset. What a thrill it is to find it in such great shape today. Layered, aromatic and super-expressive, the 2011 is a wine of tremendous stature. Dark fruit, chocolate, sage and dried flowers all meld into the racy finish. The 2011 is quite simply outrageous. Readers lucky enough to own it should be thrilled. What a wine!Antonio Galloni31st May 2022

A New Name in a Historic Vineyard

The J.J. Cohn Estate that produces Scarecrow borders what was once the legendary vineyard of Inglenook winemaker Gustave Niebaum. In 1945, the then owner John Daniel convinced his neighbour, J.J. Cohn, to plant eighty acres of Cabernet vines on the 180-acre parcel Cohn had purchased a few years prior.

The property served as a summer retreat for Cohn’s wife and their family and J. J had no ambitions to become a winemaker himself, but Daniel promised to buy his grapes, so Cohn planted vines. J.J. Cohn fruit figured prominently in Inglenook’s superlative Cabernet Sauvignons of the post-war era, and has more recently gone into wines of such renown as Opus One, Niebaum-Coppola, Duckhorn, Insignia and Etude. This is an estate with a formidable pedigree that continues to make some of the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa. The winemaker is Celia Welch - one of Napa's most experienced.
