Domaine Simon Bize Savigny-Lès-Beaune Aux Vergelesses is a mature-vintage 1er Cru Burgundy Pinot Noir from the appellation of Savigny-Lès-Beaune in the Côte de Beaune. The family-run Domaine Simon Bize was founded in 1868 in Savigny-lès-Beaune. While the quality and terroir expression of this domaine`s wines was for a long time something of an insider`s secret, these days the winery`s star is in the ascendant. The 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses could be viewed as a flagship wine of the domaine - a plush, expressive Pinot Noir capable of long ageing. "This is also quite cool and restrained with its broad-based nose of plum, violets, earth, spicy and red currant aromas. There is a quite sophisticated mouth feel to the highly energetic and beautifully well-detailed middle weight flavours that are less seductively textured but even finer. This impression is abetted by the very fine grain of the supporting tannins all wrapped in a long, balanced and serious finish. Lovely juice though note that like the Aux Fourneaux at least a decade of cellar is recommended." Burghound, 2013

Lots of dissolved gas in this. Not that rewarding but lively certainly. (JR)Jancis Robinson9th January 2013
