Clos Rougeard is a renowned wine producer located in the Saumur-Champigny appellation within the Loire Valley. It is a family-owned estate, and the Foucault brothers, Charly and Nady, were instrumental in establishing its reputation. Their vineyards are meticulously tended, with an emphasis on low yields and achieving optimal ripeness. ‘Les Poyeux’ is a 100% Cabernet Franc, made from a 2.9-hectare plot of 40 to 70-year-old vines. The wines from the 2017 vintage in the Loire Valley, including Saumur-Champigny, are often praised for their vibrant fruit character, freshness, and approachability. Presented here in a generous magnum format.

My favourite among the three reds in the 2017 horizontal, so pure in ripe cherry expressions and refined tannin, earthy elegance and subtle notes of truffle and sous bois. A stirring balance between tangy, Indian Tonic freshness and juicy concentration. And what sumptuous palate texture. The French word éclat applies: energy and brightness entice further drinking as does the long finish. Potentially higher score with cellaring, but already grand and ready to enjoy. No new oak for the 24 months ageing, then 4 years in bottle before release.Panos Kakaviatos27th November 2023

The 2017 Les Poyeux is a silken, elegant wine that's just starting to turn away from its primary fruits and develop some mellow tertiary characters. Very smooth in texture, an abundance of fine, powdery tannins coats the mouth. The 2017 is long, fragrant and sophisticated, with black fruit, woody herbs, Christmas spices and the merest whiff of nectarine, which I commonly find in Les Poyeux, year in, year out. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Clos Rougeard Les Poyeux springs from the glass with vivacious black raspberries, morello cherries, tar, and bay leaves notes, followed by a touch of pencil shavings. The light to medium-bodied palate delivers wonderfully bright, crunchy red and black fruit flavors with fantastic tension, supported by elegantly knit, fine-grained tannins, finishing with great length and a real skip in its step.Lisa Perrotti-Brown14th March 2024
