Sassicaia 2022 is a full-bodied Supertuscan red wine from the Bolgheri sub-region of Tuscany. This vintage features a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. It undergoes meticulous fermentation, followed by a maceration period of 14-16 days. The wine is aged for around 24 months in French oak barriques, contributing to its complex structure. In appearance, it presents a deep ruby hue. The palate is marked by firm tannins and layers of herbal notes, with a closing freshness. Best served after decanting, it promises longevity, ideal for enjoyment beyond 2030.

The tannins are gentle and integrated even now, while still in barrel, and its provides a striking contrast wtih many 2022s from this corner of Tuscany, where concentration is the byword. Sassicaia is able to retain acidity even in the hottest summers, and the balsamic and butterscotch notes are beautifully balanced by rosebuds, lavender, red cherries, rosemary, fennel, charred sandalwood and tomato leaf. The frame is in place, and the density offset by a soft textural caress. Sample taken from three barrels, final wine to be shipped in a few months, after a dry vintage helped by a few rains here just before harvest. 40% new oak for ageing, Carlo Paoli director.Jane Anson16th October 2024

The 2022 Sassicaia is a very pretty, expressive wine. There’s a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon (and less Franc) in this year’s blend, and that really comes through in the wine’s flavor profile and slightly bruising tannins. Dark cherry, plum, leather, licorice, graphite and incense give the 2022 striking aromatic presence to match its rather brooding personality. There’s a bit of tension in the tannins that needs time to resolve. Yields were down about 20% because of intensely cold weather in spring, variable conditions during flowering and set, and then searing heat and drought throughout the summer.Antonio Galloni1st February 2025

Tenuta San Guido

The Original Super Tuscan

Tenuta San Guido’s flagship red wine, Sassicaia wine, has become a Tuscan icon in its own right. This fine wine, made from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, is characterized by all the hallmarks that have established it as one of Italy’s standout wines: sumptuous fruit, fine texture, beautiful perfume, and effortless balance. A prototype of Super Tuscan wines, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta decided to experiment with Bordeaux varietals, noting a similarity between the geography of Tuscany and Graves in southwest France.

Early vintages of this iconic Italian wine were only available to taste at the winery. The 1968 vintage was the first Sassicaia wine to be sold to the public, and in 1994, Sassicaia was granted its own official DOC: Bolgheri-Sassicaia DOC. Early vintages received mixed reviews, but the introduction of Tronçais oak barriques in the late 1970s saw a rise in quality that has been maintained ever since. Alongside the Grand Vin, the Tenuta San Guido estate produces a second wine, Guidalberto, and a third wine, La Difese.

Sassicaia's impact on the wine world is profound, exemplifying the fine elegance of Tuscan wine. With a dedication to quality and tradition, Tenuta San Guido continues to set the benchmark for fine wines globally.
