Sassicaia is the flagship of Tenuta San Guido and an icon of Italian wine. The exceptionally hot 2017 vintage delivers huge waves of wild berry, forest floor and bramble fruit on the nose. Despite its initial boldness, this is a wonderfully well-balanced wine with excellent aromatic elegant, minerality and sumptuously creamy mouthfeel.

The 2017 Sassicaia shows the natural richness and intensity of the year while retaining its mid-weight sense of balance and overall poise. A burst of super-ripe red cherry/plum fruit makes a strong opening statement. Mocha, cinnamon, leather and dried herbs appear later, adding aromatic lift. The 2017 is a fairly immediate Sassicaia. Even so, it has enough energy to drink well for a number of years. Production is down 35%, a combination of naturally low yields, dehydration on the vine and then selection in the cellar. Most of the fruit comes from the estate’ hillside vineyards, older parcels that resisted the conditions better.Antonio Galloni1st January 2021
17.5 Jancis Robinson
First commercial vintage 1968. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc.Hint of opaqueness to the ruby colour. Nutty, spicy oak, with deep, nuanced black fruit and a dash of fresh earth. More backward, less expressive than the scented, floral 2016 shown last year. Also, unlike the 2016, this is more firmly structured and tighter, so is not one that would favour broaching young. The tannins are nevertheless very fine grained and will convey the sense of elegance of Sassicaia over time. Lovely length. (TJ)

Tenuta San Guido

The Original Super Tuscan

Tenuta San Guido’s flagship red wine, Sassicaia wine, has become a Tuscan icon in its own right. This fine wine, made from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, is characterized by all the hallmarks that have established it as one of Italy’s standout wines: sumptuous fruit, fine texture, beautiful perfume, and effortless balance. A prototype of Super Tuscan wines, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta decided to experiment with Bordeaux varietals, noting a similarity between the geography of Tuscany and Graves in southwest France.

Early vintages of this iconic Italian wine were only available to taste at the winery. The 1968 vintage was the first Sassicaia wine to be sold to the public, and in 1994, Sassicaia was granted its own official DOC: Bolgheri-Sassicaia DOC. Early vintages received mixed reviews, but the introduction of Tronçais oak barriques in the late 1970s saw a rise in quality that has been maintained ever since. Alongside the Grand Vin, the Tenuta San Guido estate produces a second wine, Guidalberto, and a third wine, La Difese.

Sassicaia's impact on the wine world is profound, exemplifying the fine elegance of Tuscan wine. With a dedication to quality and tradition, Tenuta San Guido continues to set the benchmark for fine wines globally.
