Sassicaia is an iconic Italian wine produced by Tenuta San Guido, widely regarded as one of the best and most famous ‘Super Tuscans’. Sassicaia is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and its style is often compared to that of Bordeaux wines. Sassicaia 2016 has garnered considerable acclaim from wine critics and enthusiasts, with many hailing it as one of the best vintages of the wine in recent memory. The wine showcases a deep, intense colour and a complex bouquet of ripe black fruits, such as blackcurrants and blackberries, accompanied by notes of cedar, tobacco, graphite, and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, the wine is rich and full-bodied, with a harmonious balance between fruit, acidity, and well-integrated tannins.
Tenuta San Guido’s 2016 Bolgheri Sassicaia, a wine that earned a three-digit score upon release, is more closed at the moment, showing an intriguing evolution in the glass as it moves from timid to briefly expressive before settling back into a quieter phase. The bouquet reveals beautiful savory tones with an almost ferrous edge, gaining complexity with elegant citrus accents of bergamot and blood orange that give the wine added articulation. The palate is defined by a delicate touch of fruit sweetness followed by lasting freshness, delivering both poise and power. Produced in a classic, structured vintage on the estate’s coastal Bolgheri vineyards, this is unquestionably an epic wine, though tasted alongside the 2021 and 2023 in this vertical, it yielded a narrow edge to those later vintages on this occasion. — Monica Larner, 29th January 2026

The 2016 Sassicaia is magnificent. Just starting to open aromatically, the 2016 is quite youthful and vigorous on the palate. Its breadth and textural intensity become increasingly apparent with a bit of time in the glass. Dark-toned fruit, gravel, dried herbs, lavender and mocha are all boldly sketched in a super-impressive Sassicaia that will reward cellaring. The growing season got off to a very early start. Warm temperatures continued through to summer, but well-timed August rain and a drop in evening temperatures proved to be a big help. Fabulous. — Antonio Galloni, 13th May 2026

The Original Super Tuscan
Tenuta San Guido’s flagship red wine, Sassicaia wine, has become a Tuscan icon in its own right. This fine wine, made from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, is characterized by all the hallmarks that have established it as one of Italy’s standout wines: sumptuous fruit, fine texture, beautiful perfume, and effortless balance. A prototype of Super Tuscan wines, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta decided to experiment with Bordeaux varietals, noting a similarity between the geography of Tuscany and Graves in southwest France.
Early vintages of this iconic Italian wine were only available to taste at the winery. The 1968 vintage was the first Sassicaia wine to be sold to the public, and in 1994, Sassicaia was granted its own official DOC: Bolgheri-Sassicaia DOC. Early vintages received mixed reviews, but the introduction of Tronçais oak barriques in the late 1970s saw a rise in quality that has been maintained ever since. Alongside the Grand Vin, the Tenuta San Guido estate produces a second wine, Guidalberto, and a third wine, La Difese.
