Sassicaia is the flagship of Tenuta San Guido and an icon of Italian wine. The 2015 blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc is a flamboyant, showy and rich wine with great immediacy in its drinking pleasure. The mouthfeel is exceptionally fine and silken in texture with seamless delivery of sumptuous fruit, spice and Mediterranean herbs.

The 2015 Sassicaia is incredibly elegant, perfumed and light on its feet. It has become even more wonderfully refined since I last tasted it. Sweet floral and spiced notes lead into a core of sweet red and purplish berry fruit. When it was younger, the 2015 was quite potent. Today, my impression is that, while the 2015 has gained some finesse, it is also starting to shut down in bottle. Wine is always a journey; the 2015 Sassicaia is a great example of that.Antonio Galloni1st March 2020

Mid to deep crimson. Savoury lifted edge on the nose. very appetising even if far from a blockbuster. No sweetness here but very svelte and with a lively Tuscan twist on the end of a very moderate palate. This is so undramatic and tentative that I can easily see some people wondering where the wine is, but I love the balance and appetising nature of it. Sappy dry finish and moderate herbal quality. Really quite long. Not one of the great Sassicaias but far from shabby. All builds towards the finish – which is really long! Some graphite but very much understated. (JR)

The Original Super Tuscan

Tenuta San Guido’s flagship red wine, Sassicaia wine, has become a Tuscan icon in its own right. This fine wine, made from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, is characterized by all the hallmarks that have established it as one of Italy’s standout wines: sumptuous fruit, fine texture, beautiful perfume, and effortless balance. A prototype of Super Tuscan wines, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta decided to experiment with Bordeaux varietals, noting a similarity between the geography of Tuscany and Graves in southwest France.

Early vintages of this iconic Italian wine were only available to taste at the winery. The 1968 vintage was the first Sassicaia wine to be sold to the public, and in 1994, Sassicaia was granted its own official DOC: Bolgheri-Sassicaia DOC. Early vintages received mixed reviews, but the introduction of Tronçais oak barriques in the late 1970s saw a rise in quality that has been maintained ever since. Alongside the Grand Vin, the Tenuta San Guido estate produces a second wine, Guidalberto, and a third wine, La Difese.

Sassicaia's impact on the wine world is profound, exemplifying the fine elegance of Tuscan wine. With a dedication to quality and tradition, Tenuta San Guido continues to set the benchmark for fine wines globally.
