Sassicaia 1984 is a mature-vintage Supertuscan blend from Tenuta San Guido in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany. Produced since the 1968 vintage, Sassicaia is one of the world`s most iconic Cabernets, produced from organically farmed vineyards close to the Tuscan coast in Bolgheri. Typically blended with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc and aged for 24 months in French oak barriques, it is characterised by all the hallmarks which have established this wine as one of Italy’s icons – sumptuous fruit, fine texture, beautiful perfume and effortless balance. On the 1984 vintage. "Like Bordeaux , a growing season that never countenanced the winemaker, Nicolo mentioning that the vines suffered three bouts of hail damage as well as a deluge of rain during the harvest. Unsurprisingly, the palate is a testament not only to the difficult growing season, but also their success at overcoming the limitations of the vintage. A moderately deep garnet core with noticeable tawny rim. A delectable nose which a touch of marzipan at first, a distant tang of Devonshire fudge. The palate is medium-bodied, not a wine of great depth, slightly leathery but with the crucial acidity lending the wine vivacity and poise. A leafy finish, a tad loose-knit with bitter cherry, a touch of espresso and bitter chocolate. Not dissimilar to a Bordeaux 1984, but a lot better in style." Neal Martin, 2007
Tenuta San Guido’s flagship red wine, Sassicaia wine, has become a Tuscan icon in its own right. This fine wine, made from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, is characterized by all the hallmarks that have established it as one of Italy’s standout wines: sumptuous fruit, fine texture, beautiful perfume, and effortless balance. A prototype of Super Tuscan wines, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta decided to experiment with Bordeaux varietals, noting a similarity between the geography of Tuscany and Graves in southwest France.
Early vintages of this iconic Italian wine were only available to taste at the winery. The 1968 vintage was the first Sassicaia wine to be sold to the public, and in 1994, Sassicaia was granted its own official DOC: Bolgheri-Sassicaia DOC. Early vintages received mixed reviews, but the introduction of Tronçais oak barriques in the late 1970s saw a rise in quality that has been maintained ever since. Alongside the Grand Vin, the Tenuta San Guido estate produces a second wine, Guidalberto, and a third wine, La Difese.
